Keep a decision log as the business grows.

Founder leadership

Founders make decisions with incomplete information. As a business grows, it becomes harder for everyone to remember the reasoning behind those decisions. A short decision log helps preserve the context without creating a new reporting burden.

Record the question, the options considered and the assumption that shaped the choice. Add the person responsible and the date when the decision should be revisited. Focus on decisions that materially affect customers, priorities or the way the team works.

When the result becomes clearer, return to the entry. Was the assumption sound? Did circumstances change? Was the problem in the decision or in how it was carried out? Separating these questions makes the review more useful than simply labelling an outcome good or bad.

Use the log to share judgement, not to assign blame. Over time it can help new colleagues understand the business and help experienced colleagues notice repeated patterns in how they approach uncertainty.
